Need help catching fish on the lake

I am pretty much a noob to fishing.  I have fished at Galts Ferry, Red Top Fishing Jetty, Acworth Beach "pier", and the little area close to to hwy 92 and cobb parkway/41 (right over the bridge).  I went fishing at those places around 10am to 3pm (give or take some).
I tried the following with no success only got a few hits on the nightcrawler but were tiny fish just eating the worm:
- fluorescent yellow 1/8 oz rooster tail.  slow-medium speed constant reeling in
-3/8 oz white spinner. slow-medium speed constant reeling in
-3/8 oz black buzz bait.  Medium speed constant reel so it buzzes across top of water.
-nightcrawlers attached to hook, no weight, with bobber 10" above
-Zoom white ice fluke Texas rigged with now weight/sinker
-Zoom 10" Green pumpkin power worm, Texas rigged, with bullet weight.  Let sink, then jerk tip of rod up, reel a little, let sink, jerk tip up
-Crankbait silver hologram.  8-12ft depth.  reel for a few seconds, pause for a few seconds, repeat
-Smithwick suspending rogue 0-6ft depth.  reel for a few seconds, pause for a few seconds, repeat


Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong or what will work? Wrong locations? Wrong time of day? Wrong technique? Wrong bait? Wrong time of year?  Unlucky?
I went fishing 3-4 times without catching 1 fish (total of about 12 hours or more).


I used to fish for trout in streams with my father as a kid (in PA). I would always catch at least 1-3 fish in just a few hours. I used only black rooster tails. I didn't know much about fishing but it wasn't hard to catch a fish.

In all fairness, I moved over here from Texas in June 2007, I have only fished from the bank a couple of times with my grand children (mainly fishing for those little fish). I can tell you from several years of fishing from a boat that the "shakey head" or jig head with 5-6" finesse worms in the watermelon candy color or green pumpkin color is by far and large the best numbers bait on the lake. There are times of the year when the fish are shallow, but most often there is deep water nearby and lots of rock. Allatoona's public fishing areas are not really prone to producing lots of fish. Unfortunately walking the banks on Toona can be a real challenge because of the terrain. There are areas that I can see from 92 on Lake Acworth that would be a lot friendlier to a bank fisherman. In that case o with your spinnerbait and buzzbait (I would go with a white and chartreuse skirt). You may want to invest in a couple of hollow body frogs like the Spro Bronze Eye in the leopard frog color for Ackworth. As for the 10" worm I have never had any luck on Toona with the T-rigged 10" worms. The Super Fluke in pearl white is a dynamite bait on Toona and I would bet it is on Acworth too. I fish mine weightless or with 1/2 a nail weight inserted between the hook bend and hook point. I fish mine on a Gamakatzu 3/0 offset roundbend hook and texpose the hook point in the back of the fluke. You change your cadence and retrieve method until you get a bite, then duplicate.

What Bob said ! I would try fishing the area at Red Top lodge will involve some walking but you can fish shallow and deeper water in that area.

Thanks Bob.  I will try the Super Fluke again.  I think mine is White Ice which looks close to the pearl white but I may buy the pearl white if I continue not to have any success with the Super fluke.
I am also going to buy a couple of hollow body frogs (Spro Bronze Eye in the leopard frog color).

Any public fishing areas in the are that I may have more luck?

Thanks swin.  I don't mind walking if the location would be better.  Is this public?  Any other spots you recommend (doesn't have to be on the lake)

I drive across the Lake Acworth Dam quite often, and though I have never fished the lake, I see a couple access areas on the west side of the lake that appear to have some readily accessible water from the bank. You may want to check it out. Also as Swin mentioned there are areas around Red Top Mountain State Park that are accessible to the lake. When fishing the Iron hill area I see a bike path/walk path that goes all around the lake. The same way over on the Etowah side of the park. There appears to be paths from the marina all the way around to the State park lodge.
