can anyone suggest a good mechanic for me to take my outboard to? im in the canton area. i thought maybe i could at least weed out some bad ones by asking here first.
Ive got a mercury 110 9.8 horse from i believe 1973. Id like to put it on my jon boat that i just got but it wont idle. its two cylinders, two stroke. It will crank up only on full throttle--after which it runs for about 45 seconds and dies. This leads me to believe the idle passageway is clogged. While i have a basic understanding of how a carb works, i dont know how to locate the plug i need to remove to clean this passage.
Also, im not even sure if this is the problem. There is excess gas that just pours out of the carb when im trying to start it. eventually it will crank with the throttle wide open and rev nicely to a high rpm--no question that its getting a good spark. So, this leads me to two additional questions. Should i suspect the float valve is stuck open, letting too much fuel in? Or maybe i have a massive air leak and the fuel simply cant get sucked in--unless its spinning at a high enough rpm to overpower the leak.
I checket the gasket in between the motor and the carb and tightened her down nice when i put the carb back on. Any other places i could be leaking air (note i checked the vac line and replaced it even though it seemed fine)
It may be worth mentioning that when i aquired this motor several years ago, we put it on merit 28 foot sailboat and it would crank no problem with throttle in idle position, and as i opened the throttle up it would struggle, never reaching full rpms. chunked her in the garaje and put the 5 horse johnson back on--it cranks first or second pull no matter what, rain or shine, even if it sat for a year. wish i could get that one, but its my dads and he will die before he gives that motor up.
any suggestions before i take this sucker to the mechanic?--maybe i should just junk her--after all its older than i am.
