I have an early 80's 40hp Mercury Mariner. The throttle and drive cables outer coating has melted in a couple of places. Pretty sure no electrical current should be going through these. Thought maybe my ignition had shorted but upon taking apart the box, no melted wires or signs of heat. What would cause these cable coverings to melt? What should i look for? How would i test to see what it is?
Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Check for proper battery to engine grounding. Corroded, Damaged or under sized ground wires could cause this. (I caught a VW Rabbit on fire twice before I figured out the ground strap was loose and current was trying to find its path to ground through my parking brake cables) Even if everything electrical is working properly electrical current will try to find a path to ground and if your throttle cables provide a better path than your ground wires current will follow them.
