Whenever I put my trolling motor on the highest speed it blows a fuse. Its a 12 volt 46# Minn Kota This is the second trolling motor for the boat and same problem on both motors. Got to be a wiring issue. Any ideas or help would be great.
Thanks Mike

May be that the wiring from the trolling motor to the batteries is to small for the current when you keep it on high for a period time. Do you have a fuse or a breaker at the battery that you can reset if tripped? This is a saftey issue to keep from bruning your boat up but is still aggrevating when trying to fish.

I've got a fuse that keeps burning out, but the wire that holds the fuse is three times smaller than the trolling motor cable. I'm sure this is the problem. I am having trouble finding a in-line fuse holder with cables that are big enough to handle the current. Any ideas or other options.
Thanks Mike

can I jump in on this one too. I have a 54lbs thrust motor guide. It was purchased new with the boat in 2010. I bent the shaft by forgetting to pull it up my second week owning the boat (oops) and other than cosmetic it was fine. But over the past 6 months or so it only seems to work on the highest setting possible. If I don't use it on high, it will go between very low power and then back to high power, without me ever switching the speeds....any clue guys?

That boat should come with 50 amp rated wiring or higher. The fuse rating should be just under the max wiring to keep from smoking your wiring. Sometimes the fuse is only rated at half the wiring rating. When that happens, you are doomed to pop a fuse when you draw the max amperage that trolling motor will take. Check the boat wiring first, if you want to change it out I would recommend 80 amp wiring and 50 amp circuit breaker or fuse. AS for GAnewbie's question, it sounds like your trolling motor may have a integrated circuit card in it that will most likely require a certified motor guide repariman. John Nutter in White, GA (exit 296, GA 411, from I 75, ) should be able to help you

Thanks Bob. I was just going to buy a new one, but if I can get it fixed for less that would be great on my wallet!

You can find replacement wire at an electrical supply house. A real parts place, not one of those sell everything places. Just tell them that it will be used in damp locations and they can fix you up with some good # 6 or # 8 stranded wire. If you can handle it get the #6 and the correct connectors for that size wires.
If anyone has a problem doing it by themselves I can help as long it is before monday the 9th or two weeks from that date after the24th.

thanks for the help guys. I will try and find the correct size wire and parts now. The strong winds this time of year make it tough to troll when you cant use max speed. Thanks again Mike
