I am looking to purchase my first bass boat and I have had several people tell me what kind of motor I "should" get on it and what I should look out for. Basically I am looking at mid '90 boats. The majority of the boats I am looking at have Mercury (120-150) or Johnson Fast strike 150's on them. A few have had Evirudes...any suggestion as to how the mercury (including xr6) holds up compared to regular Johnson and the Johnson fast strike?
Or in other words...which motor is better? Any feedback or suggestions would be very helpful!

Ford vs Chevy question there. I have had all Three, Merc 150 xr6 Not a lick of trouble been told there bullet proof, 110 Johnson Not a lick of trouble, Currently on a 200 Yammie Not a lick of trouble. It being my first boat I wouldn't be so concerned with whats on the back. Find the boat that suits your needs first and foremost,, no sense in buy it because it has a particular brand motor on it. Once you find the boat then take it to a reputable marina and ask them to run a compression test on the motor and see if they can tell how many hours are on the motor. Also ask the owner if he has records of his repairs/maintenance. Im sure the Marina can advise you if there is any major problems once you get the test results.
PS Ray "leapinlineman" Has a good first bass boat up for sale see the swap and sell section
