Howdy from the west coast . Been surfing around the internet reading about float n fly fishing after a disappointing outing battling cold water and suspended bass . Found the Mike Bucca videos and it got me thinking . I read about float n fly fishing years ago and tried it once with a 7' rod after buying a couple of flies and floats and threw it out amongst some suspended spotted bass without a bite . I pretty much gave up on it after convincing myself it would not work in California due to the typical warmer winters we have . I am thinking I may have been too hasty in giving up on this technique so I am going to give it another shot with the right equipment this time . I have an excellent deep clear Smallmouth lake and another spotted bass dominated fishery near where I live . I have yet to see anybody on the water throwing this set up so it could be wide open . My 10' Vertex rod is supposed to be delivered today but it has been really warm and clear over the last week . Weather forecast says overcast conditions possible for next weekend though ?...........KenS

Welcome to our forum, hope you find some useful info here. Just remember the fish relate to the water temp not your outside temp and I know some of those west coast lakes stay cool to cold year round.

If I can give you any inspriation at all about it working in California it will be this. Christie @ Natures ships more Flies to California than anywhere else. People are using them out west just not talking.. There were 2 Western TV shows done using Christie's flies. Both were on Bass West TV. Richard Dobyns (Gary Dobyns son) did one and Mark Fong did the other.
