Your best day(s) on the lake

What was your best day or days on the lake?
Did you win a tourney or just catch them good. What made it the best day for you? Was it what you caught or who you were fishing with?

I have two days, neither was in a tournament.

One was with my dad on New Years Eve in I think 1981. He was off all week with the holidays and he and I had gone hunting earlier in the week and I had shreaded my feet in new boots walking and couldn't go hunting again.
We wanted to go do something and since hunting was out, we went to a little farm pond / pay lake for a few hours. The weather was warm, high 60s and low 70s and had been for about a week.
We fished for about 20 minutes from shore in the deep end of this pond which was probably 25 feet deep at the deepest before the first fish was caught. Once we figured it out though, we probably caught close to 40 bass yo-yoing a Bayou Boogie. They were not all monsters, my dad did catch one over 5 lbs, but the average was probably close to 2.5 lbs and you could get a bite on almost every cast. We lost way more than we landed, but we laughed and had fun and even caught enough fish to have a New Years Eve fish fry at a friend of my dads house. It was great because it was a ton of fun which we would not have done if I had not torn up my feet in those boots.

The other one was another pure freak event that turned into a fun time. I came home for college in 1990 for spring break and went to a local golf course in Rome to try to catch some fish / get away from the relatives. I was throwing a fluke, trying to figure out how to fish one when the wind really started blowing hard. I had only taken a handful of baits with me, so I changed to a rattletrap in the black back and chartruse sides color. There was another guy there fishing and he was older than me and fishing for crappie, but he did have a old spring type scale with him and thank goodness he did. First cast with the trap and I hauled in a 3 pounder and it just got better from there. It was cloudy and that March wind really kicked into gear and if I could reel that trap just fast enough to keep it just ticking the grass in the lake it would get blasted. I caught 24 fish and lost probably 10 more and the best five was a 9-14, 8-13, 7-15, 7-13 and a 7-11. That guy would weigh them and toss them back and I would make another cast. Finally a 5 pounder swallowed the trap into its gills and I didn't have any pliers or any other traps, so I came home and cleaned the fish and and got my trap back. Two weeks later that golf course lake, Callier Springs which was stocked with Florida Strain bass and spring fed, had the d**n wash out and a lot of those bass ended up in the Etowah River just north of Rome. But what a fun afternoon that was, and I still have that trap. It lets water in now and has a broken fin, but I have not managed to lose it yet.

1) May 1987 Lake Oconee, Rockdale County bass club tournament win 23.41 lbs. Cranking a Bagley's Killer BII and a chrome/Blue Rat-L-Trap Hwy 44 rip rap/roadbed.

2) Dec 1985 Lake Sinclair. First tournament ever fished in Georgia with same club. 3 fish 14.10 lbs tournament win. One fish was a 10-8 Largemouth been mounted on my wall ever since.

April 1995 - Brush Creek Res. Indiana. Crappy weather with no other boats on the lake, and usually not too many there anyway. Had five a fish limit over 30 pounds, with a 10-8 kicker. At one point the big bass was jumping on the opposite side of the boat where I was, and I thought at that point that the big one was definitely going to get away. Probably ended up catching around 15 fish total and none were under 3 pounds. All were caught on a Walmart special spinner bait, rod and reel. The 10-8 is hanging on the wall in my office and is my Avatar. Doubt that I will ever beat that day, especially on Allatoona!

Actually one of my best days on the lake was on Allatoona got these 2 fish plus a 3lber on a half day.. Ron288 Ronnie Callahan was my back seater that day. 9lber and a 7.5lb plus a 3lb spot I couldn't shake off . I

Uh Ray you had your shot at the bottom fish that had your pointer still stuck in him that you lost in Linemans cove .

Well very near there I had one about the size of those two come up for a look at a swimbait in some schooling activity a few years ago. Followed it to the boat, sat there for 10 seconds just looking at me then just eased off, I was less than pleased as I was in a tournament.....lol...

No. 3 for me. Fishing a golf course pond in Conyers i think in 1988, had just bought a new rod & reel combo, it was in December. There was one section of this pond of about 3 acres that the golf course owner let people fish because it didn't interfere with golfers, i knew of some trees around a couple of stumps that had been out of the water but the pond was higher that day. Had a Black on Black jig tied on and was just testing out my new combo baitcaster, cast my bait to the brush and stump, thought i was hung in it but my line moved and i just started reeling. Huge largemouth, didn't have a scale with me so i filled my cooler with pond water and drove about a mile away to Sportsman's Paradise Tackle shop(closed now)and they weighed it for me...11 lb 2 oz(Mechanical Scales) Took the fish back to the pond as fast as i could and released her, she swam off just fine. Did'nt want to mount her on the wall because i already had the 10-8 mounted from the Sinclair tournament.

Ray, You mean Lucille? I moved Lucille a good ways away from where I caught her. It's been several years now and I haven't side scale or fin of Lucille since but I haven't given up on catching here again. . I got her directly across from Linemans cove in a pocket. I released her in a pocket near Allatoona Pass. If you meant the bottom fish. She was let go exactly where she was caught. Linemans cove hasn't been the same since then.. That was a helluva hole. But still can't rival Bull Hole ~~~~~
