I am going to try my best this summer to get off the banks and fish deep. This was my first experience this past weekend.

Honestly I am not 100% on that, sorry. I know I should of been paying attention.

But, I am thinking maybe 15' or more. I will go out again soon and then let you know for sure. I need to know also

If you really want to learn to fish deep and understanding brush and deep structure fishing go to craters or Lanier. They will bite consistently in 35-45 feet of water. Once you learn to fish off shore it's a totally different ball game.

My buddy keeps wanting me to also go over to Lanier. That is my goal this summer, to learn off shore / deeper fishing. Last summer I really got skunked.

I agree! I have only been at it for 2 years and I am convinced it is the way to go in the summer for both Large mouth and spots. If you want to learn from an expert on Lanier I highly suggest calling Lanier Jim 770-374-1000. I spent last Saturday with him working on Dropshotting deep brush and mastering my electronics. It was the best $150 I have spent in a long time. There is not a guide in the county that will spend 8 hours on the water with you for $150

Everyday you put off going out with Jimmy is just a wasted day in your fishing life. LJ is a great guy, fishing with him is a blast and he really knows the drop shot, using the GPS and staying on the fish. Running and gunning is the name of the game with him. Standing on one leg working the trolling motor in 20 mph winds to stay on a brush pile is an art in itself. Give him a call, you'll be well pleased when you've been. Lanier Baits on FB.

Rhinobait, I don't know where you live or your proximity to the lakes mentioned here, but my personal thoughts are that Carters Lake is one the best drop shot lakes in the region. It is a lot quieter and does not have ANY big boat traffic. Lake Lanier is a total circus this time of year and a real beating when you are trying to structure fish (day or night). From a learning standpoint, my own personal feelings on that subject is that I learn best by trial and error. There is certainly enough instructional stuff out there to teach you the basics, the rest is TOW.

Yeah. I suppose for the past two summers I have had this boat, I haven't ventured out to much. Allatoona is, I think, less then 2 miles for me and I do not have to get on any major roads. So, it has been really nice. But, the more I learn from the locals and old timers, the more I learn about how Allatoona was built and it primary purpose is water control (from my understanding). With that said, after getting beat up today by the waves for the massive wake boats, I think it's time for a change of scenery. Thanks for the tip on Carters (my wife and I use to kayak there). Guess I will be planning my Carters trip tonight for tomorrow.

Side note - I didn't mean to sound harsh about having a guide to teach me fishing. Just woke up when I read that post. I am all for learning and sharing information. Bass fishing is all new to me so the more I can shove in my head the better 😀. One thing is for sure, I didn't think the costs would be never ending!

Ain't that the truth!! lol! I cannot begin to estimate how much money I've spent on this sport and I one of the most frugal cheap guys out there!
