Fishing this past week has been weird. Weird that the #'s of fish aren't near what they should be for the temps that we have but we still haven't hit 65 in the areas where we need 65 degrees for the staging bite (huge numbers) of fish to start happening. We still haven't seen the best of what Allatoona has to offer mark my words on that. I think that when the COE dropped the water a foot in 2 days might have had an effect on the bite some. There are some fish spawning but it seems to be sporadic but it does get better and better everyday that went by. Still no mass movement into the shallows in my limited time looking up shallow. But I will say this and I said this last year. This drought we had last year will be a blessing in disguise for our largemouth. Look at all the weeds and crap up in the shallows from when the water was low. This is going to help our largemouth tremendously. Don't worry about the water levels going up and down just yet as we have plenty of good spawning grounds and the vast majority of the fish have yet to spawn. I really think this years class is going to be huge largemouth wise.
I did see one 7lber roaming in the shallows yesterday but she wasn't locked on. Earlier in the week I found a decent 3lber on the bed and I texted Steve Welchel aka Plough nearby and he and his buddy and myself played with her for a while teaching them the spawning ritual and how to read a fish on the bed. We finally caught her at the end after a few modifications LOL and released her back and she went right back to the bed.
I am still getting some BIG followers on the Hampton Shad. Nothing picture worthy on the big bait this past week with only a handful of smaller fish ie 3 to 4lbs range. The big spots are still very elusive and out deep. The vast majority of them aren't chasing worth a flip. I had a nice 5lb + spot follow me but the rest have been largemouth. Very strange as historically with water in the 60's those spots should be hammering right now. They won't be able to avoid my boat much longer! It's just a matter of time now! LOL. I really think that after this cold front blows over late next week or early the following week the fishing should be fantastic weather especially for the tournament on the 19th pending no more major fronts of course.
One of the highlights of last week was taking out Tom and his 15 year old son Nick and we caught a handful of fish with Nick catching his very first spotted bass. I also tried to catch a toad on the swimbait and I let him reel it in as casting my swimbait setup is a bit much for a 15 year old. But he did get this one pictured below. Here are a few pics from that outing that I wanted to share.
Good luck out there the best has YET to come!
