Water Temp 35-45
Water Clarity Yohoo to Clear
Water Level 8.11ft low and falling
I got out late today and had the game plan of high tailing to Knox Bridge to the crystal clear water I saw when I drove over Hwy 20. I launched at Kellogg and made it to the Delta area and was met by a giant sheet of ice covering the entire Delta Flat. Water temp was a toasty 35 degrees. I tried going through the ice a few years ago and my Hamby's took a beating so I turned around and headed south.
Just so you know the mud goes from the LIttle RIver Delta all the way to the dam there was no clear spots anywhere in between. Today it was muddy all the way to Red Top ramp due to the North wind we had today. Once you got on the other side of Bethany it cleared up some. Almost all of the creeks are blown out as well. It's taking a good while for the lake to clear up due to the COE pulling water through the dam it isn't giving the sediment time to settle so that it can clear up...
I literally drove around for 3 hrs looking for fish before I stopped for the first time. There are alot of white bass out there chasing bait but it was difficult finding any concentrations of green fish. The day started off fairly slow with the F n F and after a few adjustments things started looking up. I ended up with 21 spots all but 3 on the F n F (spoons) and everyone of the F n F fish came off the Lester Fly custom made by David Lester of Natures Tackle Box with that Sickle Hook head. Almost all of my fish came off of DEEP humps and over brush in the midlake area. The key was fishing those wind blown humps and brushpiles. Windblown was key as the fish were just waiting for an easy meal to be swept to them. On one particular hump/brushpile I got 7 fish all on consecutive casts. At one time I had my F n F leader pushing 23 feet by my best measurements. When you get warm toasty days like today the fish tend to suspend much deeper than after a cold snap. My best guess is during those cold post frontal conditions the fish move up shallower to suspend to take advantage of the heat created by the sun. Pre frontal or warmer than normal days they will drop alot deeper. I basically took what Chris (acebarker) stated in his report and built upon it. No sense doing what he did all day yesterday all over again as he knows how I fish so the deeper adjustment was the ticket for me today.
The other three spots I got were caught on 3/4 oz white custom spoons as a few schools flew under the radar I just dropped a spoon down on them. The fish I got today were not picture worthy. Quite a few of them were in the 1.5 to 2lb range with maybe 1 pushing 2.5lbs. Tough day for the bigger fish.
Just a note I am moving some of my F n F trips to Carters in the next 2 weeks until the lake clears up a little more. So if your interested in a possible Magnum Carters Spot on light line and spinning gear shoot me an email and lets get you on the calender.
