I have just recently started taking the kids fishing at Old Rope Mill Park. We walk downstream and fish under 575, or a little further down, just pass the shallow rocks.
We are having limited luck, small bream, crappie, and bass, but nothing bigger than 6-8 inches. I think we have caught everything on small Beetle Spins, and a couple of the bream on worms. We have not had a bite on catfish lines. I've tried stink baits and chicken livers.
Many of the regulars I've talked say that good sized bass run up the river, but I don't know where to find them. If any of you can help me get the kids onto some decent fish, I would really appreciate it.

My boys and I have been fishing that area pretty regularly. In fact we went down today for a few hours. We have found that you need to go a bit further down stream to catch the bigger fish. The area we have been fishing is below the second set of "rapids". Today we caught 9 bass and two good sized bream. We also saw a guy catch a striper that went about 8-9 lbs. White bass and crappie are just getting started. As far as baits go, I have been catching all my bass on a 5" green pumpking shakey worm with a 1/8 oz. jighead. My boys have been using nightcrawlers with just a small weight, just letting it drift in the current. Hope this helps.

Great! Thanks for the help. We were there today for a couple of hours around lunch.
Probably won't be able to get back out there until next Sunday, but I'll give the green worms a try.

Jon, I was in between boats for about a year and did a lot of bank fishing. I've never fished the area you speak of but I too live in Woodstock area and the one of the best places I have found is under the bridge at little river. Also with the warm weather we are going to get the crappie will be moving up. You can sit at the boat ramp at little river and fish the rocks and trash with minnows. OR you can go under the brigde or walk over the bridge to the other side and fish the tires. GET ROSEY RED MINNOWS!! Thats all I use for crappie and I think they work way better. Also, you can fish a small jig or curly tail about a foot or so under a bobber, just cast it out and slowly reel it back in. You can get them at the texaco right up the road from little river ramp.

Take I-575 North to the new Ridge Parkway Exit, turn right then left at the first light by the New MCdonald's and this road will take you right into the park, last i saw though(Dec 2013) the park is flooded

If you want to catch catfish bank fishing, I'd suggest go under Kellogg bridge. Catch some small fish that hide in the rocks, then hook them through the back on circle hooks, I use a 3-way swivel with a 1/2oz weight and a 3 foot leader then just set up your poles and wait. I've had a lot of good luck doing that. And to increase your odds if ya get the chance go out the prior night and chum the water with some rotten shrimp, just to draw them to the area. Hope this helps.

My buddy and me are heading out here this morning, thanks for everyone's replies as they are very helpful. I grew up near lake Jackson and the south river on the other side of town and just trying to learn where I can catch some nice fish until I get my boat(if anyone has a decent john boat under 800 I'm looking). I'll report back on how it goes, I plan to throw a variety of lures at them depending on water clarity.

The best way to catch catfish in rope mill is on cut up bream.when it rains an the river is up a lil catfish feed more and there natural food sorce is bream an bait fish. As for white bass ,stripers ,crappie, minnows is best medium to small minnows work best on a bobber an a lil spilt shot sinker thin hooks keep the minnows alive longer you can hook them through the tail or lips an they will stay alive longer always keep moving if you dont get a fish in 20 mins move on down or up it dosnt matter ive caught big fish way up river they are all in it but april is the time every type of fish is spawning so keep at it an watch for snakes copperheads are there trust me.be safe a good luck
