Bob, were they Mercury voltage regs or aftermarket? They were CDI brand aftermarket regs.

thanks for the info.....gonna buy either the 70 or 85 dollar one--the specs arent much different for the extra 15$. Im gonna wait around till i can get a nice 55lb thrust or so trolling motor then get a second battery and a nice charger, until then im going the super cheap route of the wally world battery w trickle charger. Who knows if this jon boat i got even holds water. gotta make an appt with the dnr guy so he can come look at my boat....with no hull numbers i guess thats what i gotta do to get it registered. dont tempt me to put the trolling motor on my tiny kayak cause ill do it

My Dekas are toast. Last 2 trips, died after 4 hrs. Looking at the Optima blue tops. Anyone have insight on these ? Thanks Have a pair of the Optima blue tops for about 2 years now. They are wired in series to the 24 volt Trolling motor. No problems yet. I keep them charged with an on board Pro Mariner ProSport 20+. The cranking battery is a lead acid type. The charger is a 3 bank 10 amp/bank and no problems so far mixing the types for the charger or the batteries. I have used them (blue tops) for a good 7 hours at about 40 to 50% power (70lb thrust). Towards the end I had to turn them up a bit to get the same speed. It took about 6 hours to recharge them to 100%. When the lead acid cranking battery dies I'm going to get another blue top. I called Optima about on board chargers before I bought the current one. They recommend only certain types for their batteries. I would contact them first before you make a switch. Helpful folks. Their contact info is on their Website. Hope this helps Coach.

After two yrs of owning my boat, my cranking batter just died on me last week - pulled it out only to realize it was actually a deep cycle battery they were using for cranking. So now i need to get a new cranking batery, bit wondering if it's okay to keep 1198 wiring run to cranking battery. I have two deep cycles up front, but would rather not have to rerun the wires to the deep cycles if i can get away with leaving it on cranking battery.
thoughts?

I run an 1197 and 1198 on my cranking battery with all of the other accessories without a problem. It does wear it down though after a day of fishing.
