Fishing is Fair. Sorry for the lack of reports guys. When you catch 3lbers + all spring long and think nothing about it, it's hard to post a summer report. The fish are starting to move into their summer haunts. I am catching fish on the ends of long points, humps, boat houses, deep brush and rock piles right now mostly on dropshot, split shot, f n f, fish head spin, dart heads and small swimbaits. It's a sissy mans lake now during the day and will be till fall. From a few of my friends they tell me that the nite bite is shaping up very nicely.
The key for me has been small baits. Our shad spawn has been over for a few weeks and the new small fry is everywhere. The white bass are going bezerk in the am shows this if you haven't seen the fry for yourself. This is just one of many things that shows you what stage of summer you are in so that you can adjust accordingly. But small baits are the deal. I'm using shad shape worms from GYCB, Tiny Flukes and other small plastics for dropshot. For my dart heads I'm tearing about a inch off a Robo worm and rigging it on my dart heads and split shot rigs. Size is definitely more important that color. Depth has been anywhere from 15ft to (30ft for the bigger dinks har har
. ).
There is a topwater bite at first light but very short lived (another sign of summer setting in). If you find the schoolers you can have a ball. If not concentrate on shady shorelines again with small Pop R type topwaters. Sammy is getting a few sniffs but the smaller poppers are better due to the fry size.
We have thrown the bigger baits and we did have a 7lb + fish and a 4lb + spot follow us in but due to a boat position error we couldn't capitilze on either of them but we know where they live
.
Also to add to insult the COE hasn't pulled water for over 4 weeks now so thats part of the reason for confusion to where the fish are. For those of you struggling try smaller baits (pains me to say that ;D) and see how you do.
Within the next few weeks the sonar/spoon bite is going to be the deal. For those of you up to snuff on your sonar your time is coming
.
Here's a picture of Ken with a nice spot on the rare but cute 5 inch Bull Shad.
