Well, just not sure but here's the short version. Standard Rudd builders grade heat pump. Not the quietest things to begin with, but mine starting making racket similar to a small Japanese car slinging a rod. Folks came out, diagnosed as failing compressor. Took down serial number, etc., and advised they would check on warranty. $90 service call - ok. Called back, advised compressor still had five days warranty, $50 exchange fee.....told them to come on out (figured I had lucked out with compressor still being under warranty!). Came out, evacuated system of old freon, exchanged compressor and small dryer/filter, filled with freon. Took 1 hour and 15 minutes - $718.00..........advised $518 of that was labor, $90 for second service call.....and the rest for the little filter/dryer......total cost to me over $800.00. If it's fair price I"m ok with it but I sure didn't know HVAC guys were getting $250.00 an hour (per person) for labor.......if not fair, don't want to use them again for anything. Thanks for any insight.

they may have a book rate just like car dealership do for thier mechanics... job says 8hrs to complete and takes the mechanic 5 hrs... mechanic still gets the 8 hr rate for the 5 hrs of labor he/she did..

That very well may have been it, Russ - didn't think about it but my son used to work in a Ford dealership and that's the way they did things...I know he loved it when he got a "five hour" job and did it in an hour.....thanks for your insight...

Yea thats pretty weird cause my day job is a mechanic ata ford delership, I dont know the prices on hvac work I just go do the change outs and installing when he needs an extra hand its pretty simple stuff most of the time, my dad is a great hvac guy and he does it for a good deal most of the time if you are from around the cartersville area you might have heard of him his name is Mike Jones he does hvac on the side and he works for Pendly hvac during the week as there sells rep. if you ever need something esle done i can give you his number!

Thats a little high, I do this for a living and never herd of a 50.00 exchange fee. Most contractors I know charge around 600.00 for warranty a compressor, just remember not all of us is like that. Most companys will give free second opions on majior repairs with a written estimate.

Thanks again Stratos185 and Rangershaun - I will be sure to contact both of you next time I have a problem - I own a small rental house that has the same kind of unit - who knows, I could be contacting you soon! My son also lives in Dallas and typical problems once in awhile - that's the way business grows - referrals from friends to honest people. I should have gotten on here before I called someone but will know better next time. Thanks again!
