Well, my Johnson 150 gave out on me on Wednesday and I have a bad feeling it will be taking a permenant "dirt nap". I'll know for sure on Tuesday whether my suspicions are right. At any rate I am looking to repower with another 2 stroke 150/175 HP engine. I know this will stir up some passion but I'd like some recommendations on what I should purchase (Merc,Evinrude,Yamaha,etc.). All help is appreciated!!

I agree with KB plus mercury's slogan isn't #1 on the water for no reason.. I wouldn't even look at a evinrude heard to many stories an seen first hand an know a guy that's on his 3rd etec powerhead an know a guy that been through 3 yamaha powerheads an 2 lower units.. Optimax/ pro xs equals great full economy PLUS great power PLUS they last forever

On the Chevy side LOL ,,,, I have had a Merc XR6 150 and it was Bullet proof,,, my bud has a Merc 200efi and has had problems from day one and is currently on his second powerhead (Motor was only 3 yrs old at that time).. I am currently on a Yamaha 200 Vmax 3.1 ox66 and to date no issues (motor is an 05 model) The Yammie does use alot of oil though.
What ever you choose I would spend the extra cash and get extended warranty,,,also look at the new 4 strokes coming out,,, they are alot lighter then the old ones,,, Look at the Yamaha SHO
Good Luck

Won't fit..........I am not running with the "big boys" yet. I have a Triton 186. A 175HP is the biggest motor I can put on it!!

I blew my Johnson 175 a couple of month ago. I decided to have it rebuilt by a guy in FL. But I also checked to see about replacing it with a new Mercury 150 or 175. The best deal I found was the Boat House in Athens AL. Moris the owner also owns ABA and he was going to give me a new Optamax 150 installed for 9000 it was a last years model. If you change from Johnson/Evinrude you will also have to change out all the controls which cost about 500 more.

Eman sorry for the tough times you are having, Like Chief said since you are rigged for Johnson it will run about 500.00 for rigging over to Merc. depending on your Budget i agree mercury is the way to go. My TR17 is rated for a 130 max-i found a great 1999 Mercury 125 on craigslist for 1600.00 and it is running like a new motor, i used to have a Forec(Gag-cough-weez) on my Triton but with this Merc 2 stroke i have now i don't have to choke it but once in the morning then i can move from spot to spot when i am fishing with just one turn of the key. Mercury is the way to go, if you try crauglist undertand that you won't get a warranty but have a mechanic you trust to a comression check. A salesman at Dalton went to Etowah TN to do a compression check on the merc 125 for me-called me right after he check it and said it was worth the price the man was asking, all i had to do was pay for that salesman's gas and he hauled it back to Dalton's for me, had em put a new water pump om it for me(Standard Thing to Do) and mount it on my boat-have not had a single issue in the 5 months i have had it on the boat. Hope it works out for you-just be carefull if you find soemthing on craigslist-it paid off for me but there are scammers on there. Also, if you do find a motor on craigslist go to www.nada.com and see if the price is right for what they are asking, NADA is like the bluebook auto. Mo ;D
