I've pretty much figured out my Nitro (18 ft) is underpowered and am considering upgrading. I really like this boat even tho it's a minnow and don't want to buy anything longer. It has Optimax 115 on it now and is top rated for a 150 hp. I guess I have two questions - one is do you think there would be a noticeable differance between 115 and 150? The second question is - is it against the law to put a motor on your boat higher than what it is rated for? I figure it would negate insurance coverage for one thing.....but was just having some thoughts.
thanks for your opinions!

If it ain't rated for it don't put it on there,Can't fish alot of tourneys and if the boat can't handle it it will be puting you in danger!!!!!!As for the 115 vrs 150,I'd say there would be a pretty good difference! You will have alot morw power and should move your 18' boat really well!!

Yes the 150 over the 115 would give you a noticeable power difference,,,, If you put a lager motor then what its rated for you may not be able to insure it as well,,,,

Thanks K and Danny - I am pretty sure I'm going to upgrade - tired of tinkering with the 115 hoping I can get it to do something it won't - just going to get the 150. Have got an e mail into Jaco's based upon some comments on the board about his motors/prices....waiting to hear from him so see if I can work a deal. Is there anyplace else out there you guys recommend for trading in this 115? It's practically new (2006) with about 30 hours on it.....
Thanks!

You are really going to have to shop around with the dealers,,,, dont be afraid to go outside our area if the deal is sweet enough,, Have you thought of putting your motor for sell on E-Bay? ?

I thought about selling it outright, Danny, but to be honest I just don't have the time to mess around taking it off, etc. etc.....I'm going to shop around and see what kind of deal I can get from a few folks to where I can just bring it in and drive it out with the new motor. Probably going to get a jack plate with it - kind of a small boat/motor combo for all that, but it will give me something else to tweak on the water. If you hear of any good deals, holler at me

It's hard for me to imagine an 18' boat that isn't rated for a 150? If it isn't rated then the insurance company may have issues, and some tournaments will have issues, but it is not against the law in any state at this time.

Bob it is max rated for a 150. Best deal so far has in fact been Jaco's (thanks Criz) - they want 6200 rigged (doesn't include prop) trading in my 2006 115 Optimax. Have to save a little more - but probably will wind up with it sooner or later.
