Still messing around with my engine before I turn it over to someone................. I'm still having trouble. Get to the ramp and sometimes it won't fire for 30 minutes. I finally get it cranked and it will run. After this it sputters and jumps and first throttle up. If I can get it to go, it runs pretty good. But I do notice the occasional sputter at high rpm. I've been noticing oily plugs and oil residue in the air silencer. Specifically in front and round the VRO unit. Don't know if this is from the constant starting attempts though. When I clean the plugs up, I get fire on first crank. So I know too much oil is part of the problem.....maybe not enough fuel mixing or air in line. Noticing a lot of oil around the carb intakes too!! Wondering if I have an oil leak somewhere or a fuel line not clamped good enough. A couple of things I'm gonna try.....otekir clamps on all fuel/oil lines....maybe air leak somewhere. Also replacing air silencer gasket as the original string gasket broke on me. I might try the clear fuel line trick to see if there any air bubbles present. Any other suggestions or comments will be appreciated! Thanks guys!!!

How old is the squeeze bulb? Do you have a fuel filter? You may want to disconnect the fuel line from the motor and pump (using the squeeze bulb) some gas into a clear container and let it sit for a few minutes to see if there is any water in the tank. It sounds more like a fuel flow problem to me (trash, air in the line, etc).

Bob,
Thanks for your input I really appreciate your thoughts. The bulb is brand new. I've checked the fuel filter and it is good. I have not looked for water in the fuel yet, but I will give this a shot this afternoon. I agree, seems like a fuel flow issue. I've got the oil flowing. Thanks again! Greg

I was having the same problem with my 175 it was hard to start most of the time and it would cut out when running at 5000 rpm. You might think about your optical eye. Johnson is bad about that going out. If you replace it make sure you use the Johnson not the after market. I had bad Optical eye, wiring harness, and power pack. We think the wiring harness blew my power pack. To me if your getting oil on your spark plug it sounds like an electrical problem. It also could be a power pack problem. I am not a mechanic but I spent 2 month and $1500 getting my to work.

How long has the gas set in the gas tank? do yo use stabil or any kind of fuel treatment? Could be your anti siphon valve, not letting gas get to the engine.. Could also be ethenol guming up the injectors.. Ethenol could also have ate away at the fuel lines.. Like said before, it very well could be the power packs an if it is just don't replace 1 replace both of them because they work in conjunction with one another..

I was having similar problems and after spending too much time and money trying to troubleshoot and fix myself, decided to take it to Bay Marine. They knew exactly what the problem was. All having to with the intake being made of plastic and after years of use and heat, it has a tendency to warp, thus providing air leakage into the intake. It cost me $600 for them to replace everything and now the engine runs like new. While in there they also found a cam that was worn, I believe it went to the optical sensor. I wish I would have just taken it to them to start with (they are experts at Johnsons) it would have cost me a whole lot less time, money (spent about enough to pay for that repair) and aggravation.

Gentlemen,
Thank you for your expert advice and insight. I do appreciate it. I'm back from vacation now and havn't touched it in a week or so. I'll be working on it here shortly and will update you on my findings and progress.
Thanks again!! Greg

Ok fellas, I finally got to work on the boat last night. I'm hoping that I found the cause. While checking the fuel line from from the bulb to the engine I found a plastic hose clamp that was not secured very well. The fuel line was very loose. I could spin the line very freely. I replaced with otiker clamp. I'm thinking that what was going on was that I was drawing in air from this point. Seems logical right now anyway. Replaced ignition switch, several other clamps, and plugs too. I haven't cranked it up yet so we'll see!!! Headed to the lake tomorrow morning with my 9 yr old to try for some whites and hybrids!!! I'll let you know how it runs!! Thanks!!

Here's my update....
Well, looks like its back to the drawing board again. Still having issues at the ramp. It took 45 minutes before I got the engine to fire. Something is definitely up. Here's the kicker though. After I got it running, it ran pretty good. In fact, I ran it WOT for awhile and it ran great. Never missed a beat. But when I throttle up, it hesitates and jumps on me sometimes. Sounds like a fuel thing to me. I read up on starting procedures and am going to try this: after turning key, give an eight count for priming(while pushing) then start. Maybe the primer solenoid is going bad. Question for everyone.......When you prime the bulb and it gets hard should it stay hard? I am noticing mine going flat a little bit.
Thanks!!

It will not have as much pressure as when you first pumped it up but it should not go flat. If it is going flat I would think the engine is pulling its suction but there is some type of blockage that is not letting the fuel flow adequately to the bulb.

Ells,
Thanks for your response. Yep....mine is doing just that. It does not go flat, it just comes down a little in pressure. So I think that end of the fuel system is OK. Get this.....in the driveway checking out the boat again a couple days ago. Try to fire it up and it won't fire up after repeated attempts. Play around with the primer system and getting plenty of fuel as far as my nose can tell!!! Flood the engine out. Finally work out the flooding and it fires up for a minute or two. Then back to no fire. I pull off the two top plug wires from the ignition coil while checking out my wiring and plug them back in. Then I give it another try. Then engine almost started by itself!!! It fired right up and idled great. Repeated starts were right on the money. Just like there was no problem at all. Gonna roll her out again today and see if I get the same erratic behavior. If so, I'll be checking out the coils, powerpack, etc....Gonna keep on pushing through with it till I narrow down the problem I guess. Thanks again!!
