so i bought a new boat back in may and i have been having some problems with it, the latest being blisters in the gel coat inside the live well. has anybody ever even heard of this happening? what can cause it and can it be repaired to a reasonable satisfaction? i don't want to name the boat manufacturer or the dealership because i don't want to bash anybody but i am starting to wonder what can be done about repairing this thing.

I'm not sure if I've ever heard of gel-coat being in the livewell? I know mine all molded plastic!

the boat is a left over model but still new. its a 2008 model, and i talked to the manufacturer today and the rep said they will repair it under warranty. as it turns out the dealer has lost his dealership for that manufacturer. that may be why they seemed uninterested in repairing the boat in the past, by the way they have had the boat for almost three of the last four months. i was hoping to have been able to get out to the lake and meet some of the members on this forum but the boat did not want to work with me on that. if everything does work out i will let you all know of the manufacturer and i will give just credit.

Don't know if any of this will help, but I found it online at a boat repair forum. "Gel coat without the protection of antifoulant paint is known to develop blisters (water seeps in under the gelcoat causing the blistering). One of the more highly recommended such paints is Imron. It's a polyurethane enamel and comes in about any color you want." You can also use bottom paint, but it may hurt the resell of the boat.

yes the rep confirmed as much. he told me it is usually caused by letting water sit on gel-coat in this case in the live well for long periods of time. and that it is very common on boats that sit in the water all the time to develop them on the bottom of the hull. the only thing i can guess is that the dealer let it sit full of water because i definitely store it under a roof but how was I to know the history of the boat, i took the dealers word, live and learn i suppose. by the way I do appreciate the input. this has been a real learning experience.

I would like to know what brand and dealer. Because I Do not want to buy boat that was manufactured wrong or of poor construction.
A new boat should not be having blisters at this time. Three of the last four months is to long. The dealer is incompetent.

as far as the dealer goes they are in Alabama and have lost their ties with the manufacturer. Truth be told If I find out that this is not an isolated incident i will give out their name so that people will no what they are dealing with. As far as the manufacturer, they have thus far pledged to honor their warranty even though the boat sat on the lot for a long time before i purchased it. but until this plays out i really don't want to say anything negative without having more details from them.
