my Merc 150 has a rough Idle and is shutting down recently.
What I have done already: new spark plugs new fuel filter new fuel line from the grommet on the hull to the engine w/new primer bulb.
None of the old plugs looked fouled, exploded or burnt n=more than normal wear and tear.
Anything else I can check on my own before taking it to the shop?

How is the water pump stream comming out of the motor. Sounds like it may be over heating after it runs awhile. I hate the Blackmax 150's have blown cylinders on my last two...Thank God for Johnson/ Evenrude.

Well, i have a 84 model 150 blackmax. When that happened to mine it was the power packs. Found that out after rebuilding carbs, which didn't fix the problem, but was glad to have done it anyway, because now i know their good to go. Imho, these motors are bullet proof. Yeah i had the power pack problem, but other than that nada, nothing. I've hade mine for 4 years and it's on the water minimum of 1 day a week and more when i can swing it. Take to reputable tech. and get an accurate diag., before you start throwing good money after bad, changing parts that aren't the problem. Again, IMHO.

I will see what I can pull off. It runs fine after it gets started well, if I take off the high idle and slam it into gear and higher RPMs fast enough. if not it chokes out. I have noticed in the last few months that my top speed has dropped from 63 to 53.

Tim probably nailed it. When those power packs start to go they cause all kinds of weird things to happen. Here's another suggestion on the power packs, do not replace only one... Replace both, for some reason replacing only one will cause the other one to go out (I don't know why). I used to have a 150 black max for 10 years (rebuilt it three times, the last time was the best because I did it myself under a master mechanics supervision). Shop around online, you can probably find rebuilt power packs online for a fraction of the cost of a new one.

Well, I dropped the Lower unit and replaced the water pump. The one at Bay Marine was a Kit. Cranked her up and the is purring like a Lion again. I guess we'll see how she runs on the water this week. If not those Power packs are $200 each . . . UGH!!!

Yep, i think that's what i paid for mine. Bob is correct about replacing both, i was told the same. As long as compression is good, i wouldn't hesitate replacing them, if that is what was diagnosed. Knock on wood, that was my last expensive repair. Now it's just the expensive GAS!

My fishing buddy has the same engine. After replacing the power packs, trigger switch, plugs, stator and rebuilding the carbs he finally found out it was the floats in the carbs. The ethanol had caused the to swell just enough to stick at times.

Jason, another inexpensive job that you can do yourself is to change out the fuel pump diaphraghm. they are made of rubber and after a while they can develop little pin holes that can cause a similar symptom.

That may be a good Idea even if it aint the problem. This boat is a 94 and had only about 30 hours on the Merc before I got it. I have easily tripled that in the last year and a half.

gunna have to rebuild my top Carb, running it this weekend and using Carb cleaner on it and I noticed Fuel was coming out of that Carb.
Usually that is something like a sticky needle. I have found a rebuild kist for the Walbro WHM Carb and hopefully get her working correctly.
