Hi everyone. I'm 41 but just getting started fishing. I don't have a boat so will be bank fishing at least at first. Would appreciate any recommendations re: choice for first rod/reel and setup. Many thanks!

Wow, your choices are numerous. For minimum frustration and durability id go with a shimano spinning reel on an ugly stick. There are many other nice spinning reel choices as well. Youll have it for 20 years. Dont put cheap mono on a spinning reel. It will ruin your trip.
People can talk about artificial baits all day but for bank fishing id go with live baits at first. Youll get better numbers and more possible species targeted. Put a minnow on the bottom and youve targeted almost every species or larger fish in toona. Worms are always productive too.
Its hard to beat a baitcasting reel for all around fishing goodness, but i wouldnt get into that right away.
