A rare sight indeed. With a current population of only around 400, it's definitely on the endangered list. I managed this quick picture before the group flew away and send it over to savingcranes.org who band and track these birds. this was from the email I received: Hi Jeff, Thank you so much for the photo! If you zoom in you can see that the cranes head is all brown – meaning it is a juvenile. Right now we only have two juveniles that are at unknown locations….and one of them has white bands on its legs that should be visible on the photo (especially with some manipulations of the colors). I have concluded that this is female no. 2-11 who “escaped” from the ultra-light migration on 21 October and could not be re-caught after she was re-sighted about a week later. She has a transmitter (black) on her right leg, but it is nonfunctional, which is how she was lost in the first place. She was last observed up in Wisconsin on 6 November. It’s great to see she made it this far south and has obviously continued to follow sandhill cranes! Please let us know if you see her again! Eva Sooooo, if any of you guys see the huge crowds of gray sandhill cranes on the lake, and there happens to be a white one in the mix, grab a picture if you can, or let these people know if you happen to see one.
