Friday evening about 7:30 while trolling, I hooked into a HUGE GAR. What a fight! When it hit, threw the boat in neutral, the reel was screaming, tightened the Drag and started the fight. we were in about 50' of water and seemed like he went to bottom, I thought this was a big Striper by the wieght, but the fight was like a big Muskee. When he finnally surfaced and came out of the water I was shocked. The bill on this thing was about 16" and the body was thick. had a camera phone and have one picture as we got him along side of the boat.

Those things are roaming everywhere. My son, Eli had one hit his jig as he was reeling in last Sun. AM. He wanted to catch it. I told him otherwise. Ranger Steve <")))><

Don't ever try to teach a hog to sing. It is a waste of time and it will annoy the hog.

Has anyone besides me ever brought one into the boat and whatever kinda redish slime that is on them gets all over the carpet of the boat. I did it once. Release them over the side since.

Incidentally I also hooked one today. He hit a spoon, of all things. Well, the spoon actually hooked his chin. I think he just swiped on it and just got hooked. A huge and strong fighter indeed. By the way, if you don’t mind small white bass then the delta flat at the mouth of Little River is full of them, especially in the evening. I ended up with 114 today (7 bass, 106 whites, and 1 gigantic gar). Had to use the net to tangle the gar teeth in order to get the spoon back. The gar obviously wouldn’t fit the net but at least the mouth/teeth got tangled good enough for me to get the spoon out. And, no, I did not and would not put it in the boat. Thought I had a big striper too (which would not make sense if it was ‘cause I think none of the big white fish are that far north yet).

I saw a longnose gar surface by our boat in the Macedonia area. It gave me the creeps! Is it safe to swim in the water around those things? In the creek by our house we have seen alligator gar, which are even scarier to me. This is one fish I hope never to catch.
