I love the map background and think that it is a unique idea. I find it irritating that the title box flashes up each time we move to a new window or topic. The sponsor of the month is another great idea that can also be tied to an article about their product and their web page as well.
The thing that I find wrong with the other web sites is that they try to cater to every one with topics. I'm not picking on anyone in particular but I like this site just the way it is with perhaps one or two more subject areas at the most. I also think that the number of sticky topics needs to be limited to one or two on any particular subject title.
Mike, I think that your thoughts about the drop by people are right on. I don't want or need to hear someone elses commercial presentations on a board that isn't their own. For example Ken Sturdevent, he is a great guy, knows a lot and has helped a lot of people. But he stepped on too many toes to get where he is. He went from giving fishing reports (in the UrinalConstitution) from guides that I still consider to be crooks. I know that you are using the web site to help your business and that is understandable. You have also helped us out more than most of us deserve and never charged us a dime. You are always ready to freely give advice to new people and that what makes you a superstar.
The biggest example I could ever give you on what not to do is GON. I know that I'm stepping on sacred territory here, but hear me out. Steve Birch started a great product with his magazine. It's the most popular one in our area. Now with his GON Network, senators and what ever he is creating a mini monarchy that he has now spread to Alabama. Soon he will be the grand royal high dutchy of the southern revolution.
I have always heard and believe in the KISS principle. You do have a great start for your web site and I hope to be able to contribute or help in any way that I am able to. I also like the people that are going to be moderators, I know that they are all first class people.
Dont forget to add a spell checker and see about getting our flag smileys too.
