My '84 Johnson has started to leak oil from the foot, I guess. I went into the garage a week or so ago and there was a small spot of black oil under the prop. What should I do or who should I take it to?
Thanks so much!

What you should do
1) Make sure before you go out again that you are complety full of oil and Gear lube. 2) Get it over the Anthony

1) Make sure before you go out again that you are complety full of oil and Gear lube. I wouldn't take that out again until it is fixed, whether or not you are full. Reason being, if gear lube can get out, water can get in, which is not a pretty sight. Now, it may not be gear lube. Lotta times, 2 stroke motors will leak out a bit of unburned oil, and whatever other carbon and gunk that collects. This will be discharged through a vent hole at the bottom of the midsection. Here is a picture of that from one of my motors a while back. At first, not realizing what was going on, I thought I had blown my LU, and that was gear lube. But, later I learned what was the issue. Basically, all it needed was a decarb, as that carbon buildup is often what causes excessive amounts of that crud to be expelled there. You may want to see if there are traces of leakage on the LU, and see exactly where it is coming from. Also, outboard gear lube is basically the same stuff as 80W-90 automotive transmission gear lube, so it has that very distinct smell. Still, it wouldn't hurt to have it serviced, even if it is just a bit of carbon buildup being expelled.

hookset 08 let me know if you need me to look it over for you. I can drain the lube pressure test the gear case and tell if it is the seals in the case or just a fuel/oil mix running down the trunk of the engine.
