I have a 40lb thrust minn kota and every time I put it on 5 speed it blows a fuse in about 30 seconds. I had another trolling motor before this one that did the same thing. Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks
Mike

What size fuse do you have? It may not be big enough to handle the amperage that it pulls @ 5 and you might need a bigger one.

20 amp fuse. Do I even need the fuse or is it safe to run the wires straight to the battery with no fuse.
Thanks

Mike, ALWAYS USE A FUSE. It is there to protect your equipment and protect against fire.
My Humble Opinion

ALWAYS fuse!!!!! Mine on my 56 lb troller was a 40 a fuse that kept doing the same thing. I replaced it with a new 40 amp and the problem was solved. Fuses or breakers do get weak too. If you're not sure what amperage fuse or breaker you should have then you should contact the manufacter or a shop that works on them for info, too large a breaker, fuse, is the same as wiring it in straight(almost).

I appreciate all the advice. Nothing more frustrating than fighting 20mph winds and your trolling motor stops working. By the time I put a new fuse in I had to start the motor to get back to my spot. Thanks again. I will try a bigger amp fuse and see how it works.
thanks
