Water temp 73ish
Water Clarity stained to clear
The entire Etowah arm is still stained. Almost looks like an Algae bloom of some type and all of Lanier is pretty much the same, but the Allatoona arm is fairly clear. I'm doing better in the Allatoona arm but I am catching fish in the Etowah arm as well. Lots of numbers of small fish. I'm not seeing the schooling bite as strong as it should be with the amount of threadfin and spot tails that I am seeing. I am seeing alot more bait on the Etowah arm than I am seeing on the Toona arm. Everything in my notes say that we should be on a good post spawn topwater bite. I'm on a sporadic one but nothing like it should be. I think the spots are at the tail end of spawning. YOu'll have a lull few days then the games will begin on topwater fishing on the flats (historically that is). I will say I think this summer will probably be a harder summer to fish compared to last year. Just a hunch that I have. We will see.
Best baits are the senko, LUcky Craft Flashminnow both 95MR and 110. Christie at Natures Tackle box has several of the 95MR's in stock if your looking for some. They are fairly hard to find. Alot of folks are asking me about what hook I prefer for the Senko. I think the best senko hook bar none is the 5/0 Gamakatsu Skip Gap hook. It does a great job on keeping your senko from sliding down the shank and at the same time the hook ups are very good. The dropshot bite is also doing very well with what little time I put into it. I just wanted to catch a half a dozen fish just to say that that bite is there. I landed 6 fish in under 10 minutes LOL so thats another viable pattern to try. Lots of small fish on the dropshot. I don't think it matters what bait you use. I caught 6 fish on 6 different types of worms. The big fish are tough right now on the Hampton Shad mainly due to the water clarity. I can't call up the bigger suspended fish suspending over 40-50ft of water if they can't see the bait to come up and whack it. I'm calling up some smaller rats but no bueno on the bigger spots other than a select few in the 3lb range. I sure hope we get our massive topwater schooling bite this year but this stained water concerns me on that bite being strong this year. If not I'll be doing some trips on Lanier to get my fill.
