hey guys, my boat sits under my carport outside with a cover on it. i have the motor trimmed down so if water blowns in the exhaust it will drain. a few minutes ago the trim started activating on its own trying to trim the motor down when its already bottomed out. i was sitting in the den and heard it. i pressed the down button on the outboard and it would not make it stop. i pressed the trim button up on the outboard and it would stop but not raise the outboard. as soon as i released the button it started again on its own. it would do it for a few seconds than stop, again, and again until i disconnected the battery's. would a possible bad battery cause this freak thing to happen or maybe a fuse? thanks for your help.

i have seen this problem with Mercs I belive its one of the switches that is the culprit

How do you determine which switch might be bad? I have three of them.

I had that problem once and it was the bow switch. I just worked it several times up and down and it has been fine since. I used to leave the main breaker on all the time until I had the problem now when I leave the lake it is turned off. On my boat the bow switch and the throttle switch will not work unless the main breaker is on but the motor switch will work with the main off.

I had my main breaker turned off as well as the other breaker I have on the opposite side of the boat. With those being off, that would elimate it to being either the trim switch on the outboard or the solenoid?

If you had your breaker off then it leaves only 2 trim switches one on the motor and the other on the shift handle. You can disconnect your battery and kill power to the motor. Just take loose the positive side ,then you will have to test each switch with a meter to see which one is bad.

My trim power is ran to the rear trolling battery, is this correct? My cranking battery only has the red/black 6 guage wires and 2 red/black smaller guage wires? My rear trolling battery has the most of the electical hook ups. Just curious if the previous owner might have messed up when he swapped to new batteries.

Josh, the only thing you need on the trolling motor batteries is the trolling motor,, everything else should be run off the main cranking battery.
You need to make sure your cranking battery is up to snuff,, give it a good full nights charge and in the am check the voltage with a volt meter, a fully charged 12 volt battery will run right at 13 volts or more,,, 12.8 or lower and your cranking battery is weak..12.5 or lower you probably need to replace it.
As you run down in the lake the cranking battery will receive a charge from the big motor.
Now with that do what Anthony suggest and check the 2 trim switches at the Motor and at the shifter.
Good luck tracing electrical problem can be a biatch...
