I have two motorguides and the shaft bearings (ball bearings in the center of the shaft) are bad on both of them. Is this a hard fix? Can I do it myself or do I need to take them to the shop?

Larry you can try Nutter Rod and Reel or Denny Smith of Marine Specialty House. Nutter has a link above or you can reach Denny @ 770-996-9014.
Ask either one of them

If your motor is like my old one, the bottom portion of the motor head is rivited in, so you would have to drill out the rivets and then replace it with bolts.
I had the same issue and I just sprayed the bearing with some WD-40 because I knew I would be replacing the motor with a Minn Kota as soon as I found one I wanted. The WD-40 worked well for a few months and then it would start getting bad again. I would just pop the cover off and re-apply the WD-40. If nothing else, it will get you by until you can take it for service.
