What's up guys ? For those of you that don't know, I've been bass fishing with my dad since I was 4. He actually took me on the boat WAY before then even. I fish with him just about every weekend. During the week, I do my big bait thing; but over the weekend I tend to mix it up a bit. Especially this time of year. So Wednesday, my dad says; "Let's go fishing tomorrow!" I'm like "okay", but then he throws out a catch. He tells me, "Let's just fun fish; don't throw swimbaits at all. We're just going to have fun and fish for schooling fish; maybe flip a little." Um..............well...................OKAY LET'S DO IT! LMAO
So we head out to Lake Murray, a small San Diego lake about 15 mins from my house. This time of year, the bass are really feeding on shad and chasing them in the main lake. You can see them busting the surface, chasing them; as they are at a lot of the local lakes. We got to the lake around 6:30 AM. Right away we can see the fish busting on shad.
I started out with two baits rigged. A Balsa Pro walking bait that's no longer made and a small Matt Lures Matt Shad.
I love fishing topwater walking baits for those surfacing fish for a few reasons. First off, they'll usually eat the surface baits well. Second, you get to see the bites. Third, I can cast that Balsa Pro a mile and that's key with this type of fishing. You want a bait you can cast a long ways and accurately.
I caught one smaller bass right away. About a 2 pounder. Later I caught another fish on the Balsa Pro. Also had a few roll on the bait! You know, they'll rush up to hammer the thing, and at the last second think "something's not quite right"; and turn back down. Then you see the water move under the bait. SUCKS! LOL Had a few knock the bait a foot out of the water. But they were eating the walking bait better than anything else I threw. Caught 6 or so more fish, before I had a really fun cast. Saw some bust, threw the Balsa Pro out, hooked one, lost it, had another one roll on the bait; then hooked up and landed another fish. So three bites on one cast and two seperate hookups! LMAO How fun is that???
I caught about 9 fish before noon! Dad and I went to flip some grass and I caught one other fish on a 5" Yamamoto Hula Grub rigged with a 3/4 oz weight and 3/0 BMF hook. Dad hooked a GOOD fish, but it pulled off in the grass.
Fished the busters again later, but they weren't coming up as much. I downsized, went to a sinking bait; and caught two more. Used a 3/16 oz Scrounger head with a small Berkley fluke style bait. Had one hit it on the sink before I ever turned the handle.
So I ended the day with 12 fish! Most were smaller size, but I did get one good one on the Balsa Pro. It's kinda funny really! We are just fun fishing, trying to relax, not take it so seriously (which is hard for me to do honestly); and I still got a good fish. How good of fish was it? Well..................
Good enough for me to put on the clown suit ;D ! LMAO Fish went 9 pounds 14 ounces! Wish it was over ten, but it wasn't! Honestly, that fish should have been a teener. I wish I would have measured it; it's a VERY long fish. Also very old. Lots of scares, top lip split in the middle, BIG bug eyes; that you really can't see in the pic. She didn't fight much, had her in the boat quick.
Not bad for a day of fun fishing if I do say so myself! Just hanging out with dad, chillin'; catching 9s! LMAO
Fun day; I may go out again with him tomorrow.
Later guys, hope you don't mind the none swimbait report. Remember it's okay to fun fish every once in a while. Oh who am I kidding? I did manage to sneak a couple swimbait rods in the boat and a few swimbaits I've been wanting to play with. Made a few casts just to see how they look and even managed a follow. LOL Got a new 11" Nates Bait and a 7.5" Nates. The 11" is a Slow/Fast sink and looks REALLY good. Amazing looking bait. Swims great at all speeds and rips well. Can't wait to use it at DVL and other lakes; especially later in the year. The 7.5" is more of a slow roll bait. Looks killer on the steady retrieve. If you cast it out and swim it slow; it stays around that 3' zone. The one I got is a Slow Sink. So I did manage to chuck a couple big baits just so I'm not too twitchy on the lake. Going through swimbait withdrawal and all that.
Take care guys,
Arden
