I have an 85 merc 200 black max. Today I had problems with the motor bogging down to the point I couldn't get on plane and then the motor would quit. I could restart, get the rpm's up in idle, put it in gear and the same thing would keep happening. Any ideas on what the problem would be? I also noticed that there seemed to be excessive smoke coming from the exhaust. Thanks for any help you can give.

I just got this boat so I don't have much history with it. I did have an issue with it coming out of the hole slow (low rpm) till it would "clear up" and then it would take off. It ran real well for half the day. I did notice that it started to cut out at wop, but again it would clear up. We stopped to fish, wanted to move and that is when we had the problem I mentioned. It starts ok but as soon as I go into gear and apply throttle, it bogs down and eventually stops. It does sound like it is misfiring as well. If you need more info, you can call me at 651-775-2968.
thanks, Bob

update!!! Started the motor on the hose this afternoon. Notice quite a bit of fuel coming out around the carbs. Found that the four bolts holding on the carb assembly were loose. Tightened all four and the problem cleared up, including the excessive smoking. However, I did find a wire that was corroded to the point that it broke off when I moved it. It is located below the top spark plug on the driver's side. I connects to a piece that looks like a spring or coil. Any idea what this is?

bob was the wire that broke insulated? or bare? if it was bare and it looks like it was connected to spring it may be a actual spring that closes off the butterfly on the carb itself... a return spring... just trying to go by what you said with out looking at what your talking about.. good luck with this problem...

It is an electrical wire on the back of the motor by the spark plugs, not by the carbs.

no problem,if u need more help let me know,a fuel pump diaphram can and will leak into engine and cause rich condition.basically too much fuel for engine to burn.
