Couple reasons we talked about - helps prevent some erosion, when the water comes back up the grass will get covered in algae, then the tiny fish have something to eat and thrive on, and then right up the food chain with the benefits. May be other reasons too, anyone else?

It is not rye grass, but a rye grain that will get as tall as wheat. Killian is also correct.
