;D Need an opinion ! Have a mint 1999 straight 6 225 Johnson . has always been well treated . All work strictly to factory spec and change plugs about every 4 months needed or not . Use both the auto oiler and a 50/1 mix as noted in the manual for high performance usage ( 60mph+) . Just started to have a hesitation and almost a stall out of the hole a couple of hits on the choke an she goes well . Started 2 weeks ago at Guntersville . Stalled out about 3 times in a row went and reprimed bulb took out slow got her goin and she ran a strong 70MPH for 8 miles back to the ramp .Pulled and cleaned my 3 week old plugs and no problem last week at G . Our yesterday and started again . As soon as I get out of the hole shot no problems at all hitting and sustaining 70MPH ? Any ideas ?? Thanks for your time and help . Bluedude

bluedude, It could be your carbs if it has been sitting for a while. What happens is with the additives in the fuel now days (if you don't put stabilizer in the gas) they start evaporating and leave the oil in the bowls of the carbs and it will start to turn to varnish and clog the high speed jets. My guess is that the carbs need attention since you stated that you pushed the choke and "she goes well". If you need me to look at it let me know. Anthony(5BASSLIMIT)

Anthony, i like to run high grade gas, i was told today that i could burn a piston doing so. Should i stay with med. grade gas. Higher grade of gas burns hotter in the engine so what is the best grade to run?? 150 black max xr4 thanks

hounddog , I would not run anything higher than mid grade for that reason , most of the new motors that are built today are designed to run on low grade gas . Some of the older high performance motors did require that you use high grade but i think you will be fine with low or mid.

Evinrudes and Johnsons were designed to run on 87 octane or the lower grade. Any thing more is a waste unless it's a hopped up or race engine. I run 87 octane in my 03 DI and no problems,BUT I run the good oil. JMHO

I would by a can of sea foam and put it in your tank with a fill up and run the s**t out of it , sounds to me that you are having a carbon build up problem, if your plugs have to be cleaned... and that seems to solve your problem. also running high test gas only enhances carbon build up in a 2 stroke outboard..and it is breaking your wallet . but seriously carbon build up is the # 1 cause of engine failure in an outboard .. hope this helps and keep us posted..
