I will take a look at it for you but if it has the electric shift and you are having shift problems it is hard to find parts for that. If it needs a tune up I think I can help you out.

That would be great,5. I'm working 10 hr days these days.but could get off a bit early if needed. And yes....... it has the electric shift. Sometimes wants to start in gear. I'm in, Emeerson , not too far from you.
My cell is 678.230.5088 you can call me anytime during the day to set up a time if you wanna.
Thanx again,
Keith

With those, starting in gear is not a good sign. Unless you have an electrical problem elsewhere, the issue will be bad shift solenoids, and they don't make them anymore. If that is the case, you have a good powerhead, and not much else. We have got two of those, and hate them.

Well, I don't deal with these particular motors that much, but there is a fairly simple troubleshoot to test the shifting solenoids. Seeing as I don't futz with them much, I can't tell you the exact method off the top of my head, but as soon as I can get home to my manuals(I am currently at a friends house), I will check, and post it.
If the solenoids are good, the issue lies in the wiring, often the control box. On the Johnsons of that year, there was no push button, it was the single lever, and there was a little toggle roller in the control box. This toggle is notorious for dying, and messing up the whole unit, until repaired. The Evinrudes had the push button shift, so the problem could lie in the buttons. The electrical connections may have corroded, due to the harsh marine environment.
If the solenoids are bad, I would start looking for a good used motor. If you can find a lower unit with good solenoids, that would work, but from what I have seen, the good solenoids cost just as much as a mid or late 70s motor. The years to shy from in terms of Johnnyrudes is '62 - '72. Those years they had either the electric, or hydroelectric shifting units.

Yes, '71 and '72 are hydro electric shift. '70 and before were plain electric shift. Y'all are going to have to give me a bit to sift through, and find the '71 50 horse manual. The troubleshooting techniques aren't listed in the Clymer or SELOC multi year manuals, that I use for most other things.

I have a 60 hp E/Rude blown powerhead ( hole in the block) but a great electric shift (push button) controls etc. L/u was in great shape. Also check the wires going into the l/u for continuity.
