I've got a 1997, 40 hp motor on my boat. This motor has been very good to me so far. One thing about this motor is it has never really shot alot of water out like most other motors I have seen. It mainly at best just spits water out. Is that normal for this motor? ?? Thanks, Woody

My first question is how long has it been since you had your impeller changed? If it has been longer than 2 years you are due to change it.

I have a Force 40 ('96) as well and was kinda nervous when I didn't see the "stream" I was used to on my Johnson. What I was told was that if at idle, there is water spitting out of the upper exhaust port, you are fine (was it you that told me that 5BASS?). Having said that, the impeller is a good idea also. Cheap insurance. You may need to get me one of those now 5Basslimit!
Woody, on a side note, can you read the size on your prop? Mine is so pitted that I can't read it and would like a new one. Your boat sounds very similar to mine, so it should work out.

I would say that you need to have it changed. The engine manufactures say every year but unless you fish 200 plus days a year you can get by every other year. Shadowfax you are correct on the water from the exhaust port.
