Well, Mike asked when I'm gonna post this fish up here; so here goes!
I caught this one May 28, 2010 at Lake Murray in San Diego, California. Got to the lake at 9 AM with my dad. Dad launched me in the boat and went to go park the truck. While he did that, I cruised the bank throwing a jerkbait. Had a fish follow my jerkbait and it turned out that it was a male bass guarding a bed. I found the bed and there was a female sitting on the outside edge of it which looked pretty nice. That's when I saw my dad walking down the ramp to the dock. I went to the dock and told him that I found a good one. I then said to him, "How would you like to sit in the back of the boat for about a hour while I fish her?" His reply was, "Na I'll just go over to that table over there and watch you!" LMAO
I didn't have any baits rigged up for bed fishing, so I tied a Jerry Rago Bluegill swimbait onto my Dobyns Champion Series 805FLIP/PUNCH rod with 65# braid. I then sprayed the bait really good with a fish attractant.
I went to the bed and tossed the Rago into the bed. When we launched, it was dead calm and easy to see. Just a few minutes later, and the conditions are changing all the time. Clouds are moving and it's going from sunny to cloudy, cloudy to sunny. The bed's in 8' of water. Wind is coming up and going away. Was kinda annoying! LMAO
On the first pitch with the Rago, the male was all over it. On one pitch, the male bit the bait three times. I deadsticked the bait in the bed, tossed it past the bed and swam it through; and shook it in the bed. The male hit multiple times. On one pitch, I saw the female come into the bed, but the male pushed her off. On the next flip; the female came in again. At this point, I couldn't see too well. I could see the bed and the fish, but not the bait really. But I knew about where the bait was. The female went to that area and the male was there too. I saw the females tail lift up and then I saw a flash. The flash was her mouth popping open. I then saw her swim to the left of the bed slowly. At this point I'm thinking, "Did she eat my bait?" I lift up on the rod, feel pressure; and swing HARD! I'm hooked up with the female!
I have her on a long heavy rod, heavy braid, and a Daiwa reel with a locked drag. The hook in the Rago swimbait is heavy duty. I'm cranking on her, fought her a bit, reach for the net; and land her. I'm pumped! She really ate the bait and had it in her mouth a ways. Good fish! I turn to my dad and he's just sitting on the picnic table with a big smile on his face. I'm fist pumping the air saying "heck yeah" a bunch of times ;D! LOL
The fish is REALLY REALLY long, but I didn't measure it. I should have! After I weighed her, the scale read 10 pounds 2 ounces. She's the fasted big bed fish I've ever caught. It felt like I fished for her for 20 to 30 minutes; but my dad said it was more like 15. LOL
We took a bunch of pics and I honestly think they all kinda suck; so I'll post a few of them. After the pics, I released the fish right back on the bed where I caught her.
The fishing has been really good for numbers lately. In the last four trips; I've caught at least 65 fish. The worst day numbers wise was the day I caught this fish pictured below; but for some reason I'm okay with that !
And here's a pic of the Jerry Rago Bluegill swimbait that caught her!
Hope ya'll are doin' well and catchin' fish! Where's my hotdog at Mike; I'm hungry!
